Statue of King Alfred

Meet the Monument

Standing proudly in the heart of Wantage’s Market Place is the Statue of King Alfred the Great — a striking marble figure of the 9th century king, crafted by Count Gleichen and unveiled on 14 July 1877. This work was gifted to the town by Robert Loyd‑Lindsay, 1st Baron Wantage (Col. Sir Robert Loyd-Lindsay) and marks a key moment in Wantage’s heritage.

Why It Matters

  • A native son of Wantage: King Alfred was born in Wantage around 849 AD, at a royal estate in the town.

  • National significance: Alfred is often called “the Great” for his defence of Wessex against Viking invasion, promotion of learning, and establishment of law.

  • Symbol of the town: The statue forms a central part of Wantage’s Market Place and reflects the town’s historic identity.
